Earth 2150 is one of the most underrated, under-advertised, and under-appreciated games of all time. I stumbled upon this game while browsing at a game store, decided to buy it Based on the story line and screen shots on the box. When I got home to play it, my machine, (a PII 333, 4MB Video) was unable to play this game. I was very frustrated…but after getting a new machine that was more than capable of running Earth, I was able to experience the ultimate in RTS Gaming! True, Earth does have some heavy system requirements, but with it’s 3D environment, rightfully so!

One of the greatest features about this game is the user interface environment. It is very easy to use and enables you to view the battle from any perspective, close in or zoomed out. Other great features of the UI is a tabbed building pane, ability to view up to three different positions of the battlefield on your screen, and record and quick-record functionality.

There are three distinct sides embroiled in this conflict, each with it’s own strengths and weaknesses. And unlike similar RTS games, each side is totally different in their structures and building procedures. For example, where two of the sides rely on mobile construction vehicles, the other side produces buildings without construction vehicles. Another example is that each side has it’s own distinct resource gathering procedures, some very simple, others unnecessarily complicated.

As is it’s title, the game takes place after the year 2150, when the Earth is caught up in the final war for survival after WWIII. At this time, Earth is comprised of only two major nations, the United Civilized States, which can be thought of as a combination of North and South America. The other major superpower is the Eurasian Dynasty. The Eurasian Dynasty is Europe and Asia united. Yet there is still one other super-power. The people of the Lunar Corporation, a race (all female, I think) that left Earth long before and began living on the moon. Due to all the environmental and physical damage that the last war brought the Earth, Earth’s orbit is unstable and is getting closer to the sun. In less than a year, the blue planet will burn up in the suns wake. So the challenge to evacuate Earth begins, with each side frantically gathering the necessary resources to build the biggest evacuation fleet ever. Of course, each side only cares about it’s people, so there are often skirmishes between sides battling over major resource fields.

The campaign play of Earth 2150 will let you choose a side, Eurasian Dynasty (referred to as ED), United Civilized States (UCS) or the Lunar Corporation (LC). Can you gather the necessary resources required to evacuate your people?

One of the great features of Earth is that it’s not only real-time in the sense that it’s not a turn-based game. But it’s also real time in the sense that you have a limited amount of days to complete the campaign. Missions may take days to complete, and the real time environment contains a clock so you actually go through an entire day and night. Conditions are different at night than in the day. You have to really watch out for secret enemy attacks in the dark! Realistic fog of war adds another element of surprise in this game. Weather conditions also play a major role. Sometimes, it’s so foggy you can barely see outside your base walls, or it may snow hindering your travel ability.

Another great feature of Earth is the underground features. The Earth bound civilizations, ED and UCS have the ability to burrow tunnels underground. This is a great way to get to islands that you otherwise couldn’t reach, or even to dig right up under your enemies walls and past their front line defenses.

Earth 2150 also includes the best map editor that I’ve ever seen. Rather than just placing random map pieces together, you can actually morph the terrain to look however you want it to. It’s a very beautiful editor, and very easy to use.

Multiplayer games are the best part of Earth. I can never get tired of playing skirmishes over my LAN. There are also several included customizable skirmish missions that you can play with up to 8 computer players. Talk about chaos!

All in all, I have to say that Earth is probably my all-time favorite game. I hope that you see how cool it is here on my webpage and decide that you have to try it for yourself. Sometime in 2001, the sequel, “The Moon Project" will be coming out. Can’t wait to get my hands on that!
